Key Tips for Preparing for a Florida Hurricane

Living in Florida means enjoying sunshine, beaches, and a vibrant lifestyle. But it also means being prepared for hurricane season. If you’re new to the area or just need a refresher, here are some key tips to help you weather the storm safely and confidently.

  1. Make a Hurricane Kit 🧰
Gather essentials like bottled water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days), non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first aid kit, medications, and important documents in a waterproof container. Don’t forget supplies for pets!
  2. Secure Your Home 🏠
Install storm shutters or board up windows with plywood. Bring in outdoor furniture, grills, and anything else that could become a projectile. Check your roof and doors for loose shingles or weak spots.
  3. Know Your Evacuation Route 🚗
Find out if you live in an evacuation zone and plan your route ahead of time. Keep your gas tank full and have a bag ready with clothes, toiletries, and chargers in case you need to leave quickly.
  4. Stay Informed 📻
Monitor local news, weather apps, and alerts from the National Hurricane Center. A battery-powered radio is a great backup if the power goes out.
  5. Communicate Your Plan 📞
Let family and friends know your plans and how to reach you. Having a communication plan reduces stress and confusion during emergencies.

Preparation is your best defense against hurricanes. Taking these steps now can help keep you and your loved ones safe when the next storm approaches. Stay safe, Florida!
